Engagement Ring Trends UK: What’s In for 2025

Just like fashion, interior design, and even hair styling, the world of engagement rings is subject to the constant ebbing and flowing of trends. As each new generation begins the marital process, the tastes and influences of new consumers are brought on to engagement rings.

Whilst engagement rings are designed to be timeless symbols of love and affection, to say that trends don’t influence the rings we as jewellers are designing would be false. From unique trends in the world of diamond engagement rings to the unique styles we’re creating for those wanting custom engagement rings, let’s look at some of the biggest trends we’re spotting in the UK’s engagement ring scene.

Solitaire settings - solitaire engagement rings

Starting off our list with less of a trend for 2025, but an engagement ring that will never not be in style - the classic solitaire engagement ring.

The solitaire engagement ring is a ring style defined by its setting. The Solitaire setting, Sometimes called a prong setting, uses four to six metal claws to hold the centre stone in place, and it’s often thought of as the classic engagement ring design. In fact, the sales data is there to back it up, with solitaire engagement rings routinely making up over 40% of all engagement ring sales in any year.

Even by today’s standards, solitaire rings are well-loved for their minimalist design, which allows customers to place their focus on the central stone and band material. To this end, some customers are getting more adventurous with solitaire rings and opting for alternative stones and stone shapes, going a step beyond the traditional, round diamond.

A solitaire engagement ring will never be out of style, and if you’re looking for a classic design, our “4 claw ‘The One’ engagement ring is impossible to go wrong with - featuring a round diamond in a classic solitaire setting. But, we also have rings that explore different shapes and stones, all in the classic aesthetic the solitaire setting provides.

Oval Cut diamonds - Oval Engagement rings

Another classic style, but one that’s found a surge in popularity in recent years. An oval engagement ring is becoming increasingly popular and is beginning to rival the classic round cut stones in terms of popularity. An oval engagement ring only indicates a stone’s shape, and has no bearing on the setting, stone type, or stone colour, so - like with the solitaire setting - there’s plenty of room to play around, whilst staying true to this trend.

In 2024, Hailer Bieber debuted her second engagement ring, which featured a lone, oval-shaped diamond on a gold band. Whilst not from the UK herself, the photos became extremely widespread, and influenced purchasing decisions across the entire western world.

It’s no surprise the style has grown increasingly popular outside of this, as oval engagement rings offer the same timeless style as round engagement rings, but have the added benefit of elongating the appearance of the fingers and making them look slender and delicate.

And we can see this in the similar rise in demand for Marquise-shaped stones, which are similar to oval-shaped stones but with pointed ends. Therefore a Marquise engagement ring provides similar elongating effects to an oval engagement ring.

If you’re looking to explore oval engagement rings, there’s a number of options you can choose from. If you’re going the Hailey Bieber route and want to keep it simple, our Aster Oval engagement ring offers a similar look - a solitaire-set, oval-shaped diamond with the option for a yellow gold band. But, there are other options you can explore too, for example, our Constellation Ring features a teal sapphire set in a halo of diamonds, providing that sleek, oval effect with the added shine of the extra stones.

Coloured stones - Coloured engagement rings

As classic as white diamonds are - like the teal-sapphire of our Constellation Ring - there’s also been a rise in requests for different coloured stones to take centre stage in engagement rings.

There are plenty of options to choose from in this department; whether it’s different coloured sapphires, a coloured diamond, or even a gemstone. Opening yourself up to the idea of a coloured stone also lets you explore different colour combinations. For example a blue stone on a yellow gold band, a teal stone on a rose gold band - there’s plenty to choose from.

This rise in popularity is due to a number of reasons, with individuality being chief amongst them - some consumers just want a ring that looks unique. Adding to this, customers have recently been placing a deeper focus on the originality of gemstones other than diamonds, and paying more attention to their contextual and metaphysical benefits in addition to their appearance. So, whilst there’s always been the option for emeralds, rubies, and more to take the place of a classic white diamond, it’s only recently that their popularity has begun to rival one another.

If you’re looking to find a happy medium between coloured stones and classic diamonds, worry not. After all coloured stones look even more brilliant when they’re set alongside supporting diamonds to enhance their shine. But whether you go the route of having a singular coloured stone or one set alongside a number of diamonds, they’re a fresh alternative to the classic, white diamond engagement rings, which have historically dominated the market.

We already mentioned our teal-sapphire Constellation Ring, but other options for lovers of coloured stones would be our Halley Ring - with its dark purple sapphire flanked by two white diamonds - and our Orion Sapphire Ring, which features an oval-cut, teal sapphire in a majestic six claw setting.

Lab grown diamonds - Lab grown diamond engagement rings

It’s difficult to call lab grown diamonds and lab grown diamond engagement rings a trend just yet, as they’ve only been commercially available since the 1980s. But their popularity has only ever gone upwards.

Lab grown diamonds, whether used in fashion jewellery, engagement rings, or other settings, are exactly what the name suggests - a diamond produced in a controlled, laboratory environment. They have the exact same properties as their natural counterparts and can even be made to be 10 times as durable.

Yes, that’s right. Lab grown diamonds look and feel the same as natural diamonds, with even well-trained experts struggling to tell the difference.

Lab grown diamonds are a more environmentally-conscious choice than their traditional diamond counterparts, as they produce less carbon emissions and cause less environmental disruption to the areas that surround diamond mines. Additionally, because they require fewer resources to harvest, lab-grown diamonds tend to come in at around 70% of the cost of natural diamonds.

So, to younger eco-conscious customers, who may be less concerned with the natural origins of their diamond, there has been a notable shift towards lab-grown diamonds in recent years. But, like with all natural diamonds, a quality cut is essential for that brilliant and highly-sought-after luxurious look.

And, if lab-grown diamonds are a route you’d be looking to go down with your own engagement ring, At Mitchel & Co, we stock both natural and lab-grown diamonds, so if you want to see just how similar the two are, swing by our shop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and have a look for yourself.

Toi et Moi engagement rings

The Toi et Moi engagement ring has seen a revival in recent years. Featuring two distinct stones in place of the traditional one, this engagement ring style was actually very popular in the 1800s, but saw a decline in the 20th century. Meaning “You and Me” in French, Toi et Moi engagement rings have more-recently become popular in the world of custom engagement rings because they allow for different stone combinations.

One such example may be placing your own birthstone alongside your partner’s. Whatever route you go down, a Toi et Moi ring allows for unique and uncommon ring designs that have a distinctly romantic charm.

Beyond just the use of two different stones, Toi et Moi rings offer incredible versatility overall. They allow for designs with stones that can be set side by side, slightly apart, or even in complementary shapes like pear and oval. The two stones can represent the unique personalities of each partner coming together in perfect harmony, making each ring truly one-of-a-kind.

If you’ve thought about purchasing a Toi et Moi ring for your future spouse, our team of master jewellers can skillfully bring your vision to life. Our Jewellery Quarter shop has proudly run since 2011 and we’d love to work with you to build a ring that’s uniquely you.
