Our Process

Mitchel & Co is an established, independent, and family-run jeweller based in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. We design and create the beautiful pieces that help you to mark the most momentous occasions in your life. We’re particularly specialist at making stunning engagement rings, perfect wedding bands, and almost anything with a diamond in it.

Here’s how we work…

This can be done right here in the store in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham or a mixture of phone and email correspondence. If you are coming in to see us, prepare for a trying-on session in which our expert team will show you a range of our exquisite pieces, noting the design features that work best for you. It might just be that you find the one true ring right there in front of you – in which case, it’s yours to take, or alternatively, we can make you a brand new ring to order.

If your ideas and tastes are more bespoke, no problem – with sketches, CAD designs, and wax models, we can make almost anything. If you are choosing an engagement ring, then once we have an idea of the design, it’s on to choosing that all-important centre stone. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds – we love them all, and will always endeavour to show you a range of options to suit your budget.

Into Production…

Your order is then on its way to our on-site production team, where the magic starts to happen. It’s here that designs start to take shape, with draft images, measurements, and modelling. Depending on the design, we will hand-carve waxes, create rendered CAD images, and print 3D wax models. Our experienced team can keep in touch with you whilst they lovingly progress your jewellery on its journey through our workshop.

First stop, casting…

Like baking a perfect cake, casting in precious metal is an art. All of our metals are, of course, hallmarked, but using a good quality metal caster is the key to creating a ring that will stand the test of time.

Unlike most imported rings, which account for the vast majority of jewellery offerings, our rings are cast right here in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, using the best precious metal casting company available.

Mount it up…

Once we have our rough casting, the next stage is ‘clean up’. Here our mounter/jeweller has the job of perfecting the metal by filing, shaping, sizing, and finishing. We use a combination of old-school techniques to state-of-the-art laser machines.

Off to be hallmarked…

Until recently, the UK was the only country to have an assay office, responsible for testing all precious metals and hallmarking them as a legal requirement. Our jewellery goes to Birmingham Assay Office to be stamped with the Birmingham anchor mark, as well as our very own Mitchel & Co makers mark, giving our jewellery the pedigree it deserves.

Get set, go…

With the ring now prepared, it’s off to be set with diamonds and gemstones. A precision process that requires meticulous attention to detail and a level of skill that is hard to find these days. Each diamond is carefully secured with varying setting styles, often under a microscope, to get a flawless finish and security.

Polish and shine…

Now it’s to our specialist polisher for more work to polish and perfect the final piece of jewellery, buffing and shining, as well as working and washing, to bring the refined article together.

All the while, our production team are guiding each and every order through a maze of weighs, checks, and quality control, as well as extra finishes, engravings, and more complex techniques – finally producing an heirloom for you to treasure.

We are certainly very proud to be a UK manufacturer and a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, I think we earned it!
